Actually to me his hair seem chestnut-colored, but easily burning out on the sun. (Which appeared only after the Exile of Noldor ). But it is a my fanon. [link] or [link] ; )) And so, it is rather - dark.

"Fair" could be translated both as "gold", and as "beautiful". And considering that the professor unambiguously attributed a gold hair color only to representatives of the third house...
